Traffic Management Operative (TMO)

What does a TMO (Traffic Management Operative) actually do?


Colloquially known as a TMO (practising warrant) and TMO-NP (non practising), you become part of the TTM (Temporary Traffic Management) crew.

When you have completed this warrant, you can work as a TMO.

Once onsite, and after being briefed by the STMS in charge, you can -

  • Mind a worksite in the absence of the STMS.
  • Set up a worksite for shoulder activities or roadside where TTM is clear of the live lane.
  • Undertake a roadside activity (on 60km/h or less road).
  • Complete an inspection activity.

Here are some of the roles a TMO can progress to -

  • STMS Cat A, B, C road environments
  • A Traffic Operations Manager
  • A TTM Mentor, TTM Assessor, or TTM Trainer
  • A TTM Planner, TMP Approver
