Plan for the unexpected

The benefits of planning for the unexpected when it comes to TMP (Temporary Traffic Management) planning.

When it comes to roadworks and temporary traffic management, the only thing you can truly expect is the unexpected.

Bad weather, equipment breakdowns, sudden changes in traffic flow — these can strike without warning, throwing even the best-laid plans off course.

That’s why every Traffic Management Plan (TMP) should include contingency dates, alternate routes or setups, and emergency procedures. A well-prepared plan doesn’t just react to problems — it anticipates them.

Why it matters:

  • Minimises delays: Alternate dates keep the project moving even when the original schedule is disrupted.
  • Keeps people safe: Emergency detours and safety measures protect workers and road users.
  • Reduces costs: Avoids last-minute scrambling that can lead to expensive changes.

In traffic management, preparation isn’t optional — it’s the difference between a smooth project and a stalled one.
